Shhhh – I’ve Got a Secret

Dearest fellow Shop-a-holics,

I’ve been keeping a secret for a little while now, but I’m so excited that I’m just going to share it with all y’all.  But first, have you ever heard of the terms slow fashion, capsule wardrobe, or mindful purchasing?

As we become more aware of our impact on the environment, it is important that we understand, (or at the very least acknowledge), our consumption habits and make mindful adjustments where possible.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to shame you into shopping remission, quite the opposite actually, but I will get to this in just a minute.

Until I do though…

Consider this…according to statistics compiled by Waste Reduction Week in Canada, the average Canadian throws out 81 pounds of textiles annually, while North Americans send 9.5 million tonnes of clothing to the landfill every year — most of which could be reused or recycled.

Not to mention the fact that some high end retailers have actually been found guilty of destroying perfectly good merchandise at the end of the season if it doesn’t sell as a means of preserving ‘brand integrity’.  Seriously?!  Now ponder this, the total value of goods one British retailer has destroyed over the past five years is more than £90m.

Ok, hopefully I’ve managed to at least open your eyes to a couple of staggering facts, so let’s get straight to the point.  Am I asking you to cut up the credit cards and sport your existing wardrobe until the end of time?  No…of course not.

However, in an effort to be more mindful of my own consumption, I have drastically cut back on frivolous trendy purchases in favour of purchasing timeless classics, from local retailers that take me through several seasons.

But the real gem that I want to share with you exists in the form of online designer consignment, where the terms “includes box and dust bag”, or “light wear at soles and insoles” is often music to my pocket book.

Prada, Gucci, Christian Louboutin, Chanel…you name it…they have it!  All in one super easy to navigate website with filters in each category to help you narrow down your search.  The only caveat, once you add a selection to your cart, you only have about 20 minutes to complete your purchase, or it may be gone forever. [insert *gasp* here]

Some other things you need to consider prior to delving into this (authenticity guaranteed) designer consignment option is that if you live in Canada, like I do, you will have to add $35USD for shipping and your Customs and Duty (collected via UPS) to each order.  Which is honestly… a small price to pay given the savings you will experience, all while extending your environmental due diligence to Mother Earth.

One final point, since you don’t have the luxury of trying on your selections, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the brand’s overall fit before you order so that you can reduce the possibility of a return.  Although the process is pretty seamless, you’re stuck paying the shipping both ways, along with the non-refundable customs and duty paid.

That said, anytime I can find new Prada shoes over 60% off is still a definite win in my books.  Happy mindful purchasing everyone! 🙂
