To B or Not to B…Botox that is…

Ok, I admit, I look forward to aging about as much as I enjoy a hearty helping of liver and onions!  So I have recently incorporated a few supplements into my diet including:

  • Collagen Peptides
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin E

Apparently as we age, our collagen production dwindles and the signs of aging are reflected in our skin, hair and nails.  By incorporating the above into my diet, it is said that I should notice an overall improvement in my skin tone and elasticity as well as my hair and nails within 30 days.  But like everything else, there are studies that support these claims as well as prove them inconclusive. It’s day 5, so we shall see.

This brings us to Botox…should I?….shouldn’t I?  Is it really worth it?  Is there a more natural way to combat the signs of aging?  BINGO!  That is the question that got me thinking.  What else can I do that doesn’t include botulinum toxin?  And no…I’m not talking Joan Rivers surgery.  😉

PRP Facials, more commonly referred to as the “Vampire Facial”, made popular by a pretty gruesome Instagram post by one of the Kardashian’s a few years ago, use your own platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the skin rejuvenation process.

So…let me get this straight…

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments are designed to help restore your natural beauty. PRP uses your own blood to isolate and extract plasma, yielding high concentrations of platelets and growth factors. PRP treatments can help treat classic signs of aging, sun damage, acne scars, thinning hair and more. PRP helps with collagen stimulation, skin tightening, skin tone and texture and reduce fine lines.

Enough said…I’m SOLD!  After researching a few Skin Rejuvenation Clinics in Calgary, I decided to book my appointment with one of the Naturopathic doctors at Essence Wellness in Marda Loop.

In a nutshell, here’s what you can expect during the procedure:

  1. They will clean your face with an antiseptic cleanser
  2. A medical grade numbing cream will be applied over your face
  3. Blood will be drawn from your arm, and spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma
  4. If you choose mesotherapy as well, your PRP will be injected directly into any areas that require specific attention
  5. Following which, the PRP will be applied all over your face and a “Dermapen” with 12 microneedles will infuse the PRP as they puncture your skin with “vertical stamps”

Personally, I think the term “Vampire Facial” is quite unappealing, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is nowhere near as gory as I was lead to imagine. Yes, your face is a bit red immediately following the procedure, however you are good to go the following day with very minimal (if any) discomfort.

According to my research, I should start to see results within a week and after 1-2 months, I should see rejuvenated skin that appears younger and feels softer and more supple.  Only time will tell at this point, but so far I am pleasantly surprised with the whole experience.

Next on my holistic anti-aging journey is facial acupuncture and perhaps the Anti-aging IV Therapy also offered at Essence Wellness.  I think I may have found my new favourite hangout.  😉
